First in Indian Film and TV

* First Sound Film: Alam Ara, 1931.
* First Colorized Film: Mughal-e-Azam in 2004 (the original black-and-white version was released in 1960).
* Alam Ara is the first Indian Talkie Movie released on 14th March 1931.
* First cinemascope film: Kaagaz Ke Phool (Directed by -Gurudutt) (1959).
* First Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film: Mother India in 1957.
* First Sponsored TV Serial: Hum Log, started in 1984, was also the first soap opera of India, ran for 156 episodes.

* First National Film Award for Cinema: Shyamchi Aai in 1954.
* First Academy Award (informally known as Oscar) winner: Bhanu Athaiya for the Best Costume Design for Gandhi (film) in 1982.
* First Actor to enact 10 roles: Kamal Haasan.
* First One Act Film - Yaddein 1969 (Sunil Dutt).
* First Talkie Actress - Rani Zubieda.
* First actress of Indian cinema: Durgabai Kamat in Mohini Bhasmasur (1913)
* 1926 Bulbul-e-Paristan Movie was the first movie directed by a Lady Director mother of Zubeida and Sultana.

* First Film to be exhibited in India on 7 July 1896, with the Lumiere Brothers' Cinematography, unveiling six silent short films at the Watson's Hotel in Bombay, viz., Entry of Cinematographe, The Sea Bath, Arrival of a Train, A Demolition, Ladies & Soldiers on Wheels and Leaving the Factory.
* First Indian to handle a cine camera Harishchandra Sakharam Bhatvadekar alias Save Dada in 1897.
* The First Cinema hall in India as built by J.F. Madan in Calcutta in 1907 and it was named Elphinstone Picture Palace.
First Hero
* First hero of an Indian film: Dattatraya Damodar Dabke  acted as Harishchandra in “Raja Harishchandra” in 1913.
* First Female Heroine: Kamala, a Maharashtrian lady with her lead role in Dadasaheb Phalke's second film “Bhasmasur Mohini” produced in 1913. Kamala's mother Durgabai also featured in the film.
